The under-the-sea hero is following the God of Thunder to Australia’s shores, with plans to film Aquaman on the Gold Coast in the coming year.

Jason Momoa, who was introduced as Aquaman in this year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, along with co-stars Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe and Patrick Wilson will head to the Sunshine State in 2017 to film the DC’s superhero’s first solo movie.

According to a short description published to IMDB, the movie follows Arthur Curry aka Aquaman who discovers he’s the heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. He must then “step forward to lead his people and to be a hero to the world”.

The movie is scheduled for release in 2018, but fans of Momoa can expect to see him and his trident in the first Justice League movie, which will be out late next year.

According to Queensland’s Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk, filming Aquaman in Queensland will not only boost the local tourism industry but also create around 600 jobs.

It’s also set to compliment this year’s filming of Thor: Ragnarok, which generated international exposure for Queensland when Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston and Idis Elba shared images of their time in the state via social media.
