Plus find out what’s in store for Rocket & Yondu.
The first Guardians of the Galaxy movie was about uniting Star Lord with his family of misfits, and the sequel will be about keeping them together…
… according to Sean Gunn, who plays the Ravager called Kraglin.
Speaking to ComicBook.com at the Heroes and Villains Fans Fest in Atlanta, Gunn said while he’s only seen some “rough trailer stuff” of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, he’s heard his brother (and director of the Guardians movies) describe the flick as being about the struggle of keeping the family unit together.
“The first movie was about creating a family the second movie is more about being a family and the struggle of maintaining that,” he said.
“I think that’s spot on and I hope that’s what resonates with people.”
Gunn continued, saying that there’ll be a focus on relationships and there’ll even be a little self doubt from the group’s talking raccoon, Rocket, who will have a “crisis as to whether or not he belongs in this family or not”.
Meanwhile, Gunn also revealed that fans can also expect the long awaited 2014 Guardians of the Galaxy follow up to have “some of the same notes that worked in the first movie”, such as comedy and family elements.
“It’s a tentpole movie, meaning it’s literally for everyone. It’s not just a kids’ movie disguised as an adult movie or vice versa. I really think it’s for all ages,” Gunn added.
“I really do think it has a heart, but it’s a comedy as well.”
Although Gunn left out details on any major differences between the first movie and the sequel, he did reveal that Vol. 2 will be set only a few months after Peter Quill aka Star Lord betrayed the Ravagers by giving them an orb stuffed with a troll doll rather than the Infinity Stone.
Although Yondu, the leader of the Ravagers, is expected to go after Quill for the deception, Gunn says that’s not the case and it creates tension between him and his followers.
“There’s a little rumbling amongst the Ravagers, like, ‘where does Yondu’s allegiance lay here? Is he going soft on Quill? So, the Ravagers have to make a decision of what they’re gonna do about Yondu and I think Kraglin is a key part of that,” he explained.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled for release on 5 May 2017.
