Marvel and Netflix have nabbed four-time Emmy Award winner and Golden Globe recipient Alfre Woodard to step into the role of Harlem’s ‘intimating’ leader in Marvel’s Luke Cage.
The industry veteran (who once played Lily Sloane in Star Trek: First Contact) joins previously announced Mike Colter (Luke Cage) and Mahershala Ali (the villainous Cottonmouth) in the series set to premiere in 2016.
Cast as Mariah Dillard, Woodard will play a local Harlem politician on a mission to ‘bring a new era’ to the streets she grew up on.
However, Marvel says the character’s life and ambitions will be thrown into turmoil by Harlem’s hero – Luke Cage – and the snake Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes who also happens to be her cousin (ouch).
According to Marvel Television’s, Jeph Loeb, Woodard brings a ‘unique’ presence to the show, making her ‘perfect as a leader of the Harlem community’.
“We couldn’t be more excited that an actress as celebrated and talented as Alfre has decided to join us on this adventure,” he said.
An official date for Marvel’s Luke Cage is yet to be announced, however, it will premier after Jessica Jones’ 20 November release.
Like Jessica Jones and Daredevil, Marvel’s Luke Cage will only be available through Netflix.
