Number two! Number two!
‘Calm down it’s just a trailer’.
That’s what I expect a number of die-hard Bond fans heard last week following the release of the official trailer for ‘Spectre’.
I know I did, from around five people after I enthusiastically explained how much they ‘need to see it’ as I opened Youtube on my iPhone for them. I even had it on replay in the office.
We (the fans) had the word ‘Spectre’, which I’m sure was a completely unfamiliar word to several before last week, trending on both Facebook and Twitter for days.
Plus the two minute and 19 second trailer has already received just under 10 million views.
To put it frank, for us it is not JUST a trailer.
It was like receiving a small injection of serotonin.
It’s been almost three years – or roughly around 950 days – since our last dose and boy were we ready for some more.
We don’t expect the non die-hard fans to completely understand the passion behind our fandom, but we can try help them get a clearer understanding of what it is that had us so riled up.
Here are five of the many things from the new trailer that drove us Bond fans a little crazy.
The evil organisation to beat and its leader haven’t been seen since ‘Diamonds Are Forever’ in 1971 (that it unless you count the bald man offering Bond a delicatessen in stainless steel from 1981’s ‘For Your Eyes Only’ or the unofficial version of Spectre that appeared in the rouge unofficial Bond film, 1983’s ‘Never Say Never Again’).
2. ‘I am the author of all your pain’
Officially listed as playing Franz Oberhauser, Christoph Walt plays a mysterious figure within Spectre who is connected to Bond in some way.
Eagle eyed Bond fans will recognise the name of Oberhauser from the Fleming books, in which the character played Bond’s ski instructor from his early days.
Is this the same character or is something more sinister afoot?
3. The continuation of the storyline that has been playing out since Casino Royale
Never have the Bond films been so linked and intertwined.
That’s not the say that the earlier Bond films didn’t reference each other (though it was very rare), but this is the first time in the movie series history that four movies have essentially been linked and underpinned by a connected story.
4. Aston Martin DB10
What a machine.
Especially created for the film, the DB10 is one of the hottest looking cars around and from the looks of the trailer, the car has a few tricks up its sleeve to help Bond escape some tricky situations.
5. Sam Mendes
Mendes has proven himself adept at handling a Bond film with the excellent Skyfall.
He has introduced a lovely visual style that brings the mood of the earlier Bond films back into the 21st century, as well as a deep and personal story.
Eagle eared fans will notice the trailer music includes more than just a subtle nod to the theme song from 1969’s ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’, a film that many hardcore Bond fans claim is the best in the series.
